The
way to build your own deck is to think of cards you like
and that look cool, and that work well together, and then form them
in a deck. "Work well" means cards that have similar effects
and are similar to each other and help each other out. For instance,
Cannon Soldier and Cannon Soldier MK2. Cannon Soldier's effect is: by
sacrificing one of your own monsters, you can inflict 500 points of
direct damage to your opponent's life points. As for Cannon Soldier
MK2, its ability is, by sacrificing two monsters on your side of the
field, you inflict 1500 points of direct damage to your opponent's life
points.
You
may ask, "Why wouldn't I just have two Cannon Soldier MK2s? They
can inflict 1000 more points of direct damage than Cannon Soldier."
The answer is, Cannon Soldier MK2 cannot be summoned automatically:
to summon it, you have to sacrifice one monster from your side of the
field, then sacrifice two MORE monsters to activate its ability (1500
direct points damage). This isn't always convenient. Cannon Soldier
is easier to activate: you don't have to sacrifice to summon it, and
you only have to sacrifice one monster to activate its ability. So you
can see that it's important to have a variety of cards in your deck.
And
speaking of variety, make sure you have all three card types: spell
cards, trap cards and monster cards. Otherwise, if you just have spell
and trap cards, for instance, you won't be able to attack and get to
your opponent's life points. If you just have monsters, you have no
spell and trap cards to protect them or to boost their powers.
